First of all, there’s Krefeld and Mönchengladbach Theatre. Back in 1950, the two cities teamed up and fused their theatres. The result is a multipurpose building with drama, musical theatre and ballet, to which the Niederrheinische Sinfoniker (Lower Rhine Symphony Orchestra) also belongs. ‘Inspire, move, entertain’ is the motto of the large and small stages. Classics from Lessing to Schiller are performed, as well as the children’s story The Night of Wishes and Queen’s Last Night. Extremely appetising spiritual nourishment.
In Viersen, the Festival Hall is the cultural centre. However, they don’t just have their own ensemble; theatres, orchestras and cabaret artists from around the world perform there, offering an ambitious cultural programme with many different types of subscriptions. Many other cities on the Lower Rhine, such as Cleves, Wesel and Erkelenz work in a similar way, and thus showcase prominent faces.
Theatre like in Shakespeare’s time
The Rhenish Regional Theatre in Neuss offers both: the ensemble performs in-house and goes on tour to towns without their own ensemble. A highlight of the theatre’s programme is the annual Shakespeare Festival in the replica of the Globe Theatre at the racecourse in Neuss. Due to the dodecagonal design, every theatregoer sits very close to the stage, ensuring a very special experience. Dinslaken Castle Theatre is also a regional theatre. It was originally founded to bring culture closer to the miners and is highly popular nowadays.
The city of Moers has the smallest city theatre in Germany. The concept of the theatre is social criticism, and it has a very special venue at its disposal: a stage at the castle. Spectators are very close to the action in its small auditorium, too, and can observe actors’ facial expressions at close quarters.
Another special location: Brüggen Castle is the venue of the Lower Rhine Theatre. The free theatre’s repertoire caters to multiple generations, offers workshops and drama courses and its ‘Lower Rhine Theatre Festival’ provides the annual highlight of the programme.
And the Neersen Castle Festival in Willich is recommended for anyone who loves theatre in the open air. Productions take place in front of a historical setting, hosting very special summer evenings with an ambitious programme from Shakespeare to Loriot.
